TEXTILE
A textile is a flexible material manufactured by interlocking bundles of yarns or threads spun from raw fibers (natural or synthetic) into long, twisted lengths. These yarns are then woven, knit, crocheted, knotted, tatting, felting, bonded, or braided together to produce textiles.
Textile-like materials were manufactured as early as the Paleolithic age, according to the finding of coloured flax fibres in a cave in the Republic of Georgia dated to , BCE. In , the Finlayson & Co factory in Tampere, Finland, had a weaving facility. In the s, textile machinery at the Cambrian Factory in Llanwrtyd, Wales.
Textile assembly trades (such as tailoring and dressmaking) frequently use the related phrases ''fabric'', ''cloth'', and ''material'' as synonyms for textile. However, in specialist usage, these names have subtle distinctions. Any material constructed of interlacing fibers, such as carpeting and geotextiles, is referred to as a textile. Textiles are not always employed in the creation of other goods, such as clothes and furniture. A fabric is a material created by weaving, knitting, spreading, felting, stitching, crocheting, or bonding that can be used to make other products, such as clothes and upholstery, and hence necessitates an additional stage in the manufacturing process. Cloth and fabric are often used interchangeably, however cloth usually refers to a piece of fabric that has been treated or cut.
